Celine 101: History

Celine is a luxurious fashion house in France whose designs are mainly simple and elegant clothes with clean cuts. The company was established in 1945 by Céline Vipiana as a construction of children’s shoes made to people’s individual measurements. But it did not take long for Celine to branch out to women’s wear of which it continues to grow in popularity among stylish women who love quality and classy fashion.

The 1960s can also be considered a major change in the development of the brand Celine that was shifting to the designer ready to wear clothing. The way Céline Vipiana envisioned herself and her brand was to design cute apparels and accessories to the contemporary woman. This concept was well understood by the targeted people, especially the trendy people; therefore, Celine built a reputation for itself by manufacturing fashionable and quality clothes.

Then in the 1990s it went through another revamp and was bought by LVMH luxury group of companies. This acquisition proved to be helpful for Celine to step up its status in the fashion industry as well as broaden its coverage. The uncomplicated design of the products in terms of its lines, colours, and orientation towards quality material became the hall mark of the brand.

For the brand, the post-millennium years became a time for success under the artistic leadership of Phoebe Philo. Philo was Celine’s creative director between 2008 and 2018 and most people view this period as the best this brand as ever witnessed. Some of her creations such as the Luggage Tote and Trapeze bags were pretty much essentials for anybody who was into the fashion world. Philo succeeded at the most important thing – to maintain ad simplicity as well as adding luxury to the brand, which made Celine all the more popular among women across the globe who seem to identify with the modern elegance look.

This was typical for all things Celine; in 2018, Philo left the company he had been shepherding since 2012, but Celine’s brand of elegant minimalism remains. Presently the costume designer at Celine is Hedi Slimane who has established a new idea in Celine design which is however based on the fundamental values of Celine. Specific references to the look by Slimane have been considered provocative with a touch of the rock ‘n’ roll; as such, the stylist has brought on board a youthful clientele to the brand to ensure that Celine does not lag behind as fashion evolves.

The story of Celine shows that the brand is able to develop after some period but remains loyal to itself. It started as an infant shoe maker and it then grows to be among the most celebrated luxury fashion brands in the world, which offers elegant and functional merchandise. Burberry is always keen on quality and workmanship and the fashion is also eternity so the brand will remain in fashion for the next many years.
